1. What message does the song communicate?

Big Daddy Weave offers an honest assessment of his experiences with God, including the pain and suffering that God has the power to stop, but chose to comfort instead.  Through this, Big Daddy Weave received God’s comfort, bolstering his faith and conviction to trust Him, even to the point of death.  Even if God chooses not to explain why or seems far away, Big Daddy Weave knows God is near.  These show that God is righteous, nice, devoted, and shields.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

This song completely aligns with Scripture.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1 and 2: While God is not obligated to address all Big Daddy Weave’s inquiries (Acts 10:34), He promises to hear him (1 John 5:14).

Lines 3-6: God allows Big Daddy Weave to go through trials and tribulations to improve his character (Romans 5:3-5, Hebrews 12:4-11, and James 1:2-4).  Big Daddy Weave experiences God’s comfort through the process (Psalm 23:4, Psalm 71:21, Psalm 119:50-52, Psalm 119:76, Psalm 119:82, Isaiah 51:3, Isaiah 57:18, Isaiah 61:2, Isaiah 66:13, Zechariah 1:17, Matthew 5:4, Matthew 11:28-30, and 2 Corinthians 1:3-7), expressing groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26).

Lines 3-6: Repeats lines 1 and 2.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers should easily recognize the Philippians 1 quote as Christian, given its overuse in Christian media.  The rest of this song is written in everyday language that is equally simple to interpret.  While we cannot expect them to respond positively to Big Daddy Weave’s message, I don’t see any potential misunderstandings, misinterpretations, or questionable theology within these lyrics.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God that Big Daddy Weave gives God such glowing remarks about His lovingkindness, comfort, and willingness to live for Him.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Big Daddy Weave’s I Know is an excellent testimonial.  He is honest in his assessment of God’s involvement, allowing him to suffer and holding him in the process.  Big Daddy Weave sees God’s goodness, kindness, and protection as he experiences God’s loving embrace.  This enables Big Daddy Weave to surrender all for God, even if he cannot feel God or must die for this cause.  This glorifies God.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
