Worship leaders Billy and Cindy Foote started while Billy was in college.  He lead worship at camps and several retreats before writing music.  His music took off with his song You Are My King during the first Passion conference, setting the stage for global outreach.  His wife Cindy helped him record several albums, including:

  • I Have a River (2005)
  • Not a God (2005)
  • Go To Everyone (2006)
  • All The World to Me (2008)
  • Wonder Working One (EP, 3009)

1. What message does the song communicate?

Billy and Cindy Foote compel their audience to praise and worship Christ as the returning King, patient and alert to look for His second coming.  Unlike Satan, who will be sent to everlasting destruction, Christ’s Kingdom will be life-giving; a joy to the nations who serve and depend upon Him.

This song is relatively short, only repeating the Chorus and second verse, alternating to end this song.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire song aligns with Scripture.

[Verse 1]

Sing to the King Who is coming to reign

Jesus is the King (Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 11:10, Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:1-6, John 12:15, John 18:37, 1 Timothy 6:13-16, Revelation 17:14, and Revelation 19:11-16) who will come again to reign forever (Matthew 24:43, Acts 1:9-11, 1 Corinthians 11:26, 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4, 2 Peter 3:10, and Revelation 16:15).

Glory to Jesus the Lamb that was slain

A commonly referenced title of Jesus found in Isaiah 53:7, John 1:29, John 1:36, 1 Peter 1:19, Revelation 5:12, and Revelation 13:8.

Life and salvation His empire shall bring

That is, eternal life with Jesus (Mark 10:29-30, John 3:15-16, John 3:36, John 4:14, John 5:24, John 5:39-40, John 6:27, John 6:40, John 10:28, John 17:3, John 20:31, Romans 5:21, Romans 6:22-23, Romans 8:18, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Galatians 6:8, 1 Timothy 1:16, 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Timothy 2:11, Hebrews 5:9, 1 Peter 5:10, 1 John 2:23-27, 1 John 5:10-13, 1 John 5:20, Jude 1:20-21, Revelation 3:5, Revelation 7:16-17, and Revelation 21:3-4).

And joy to the nations when Jesus is King

Earthly kingdoms will serve and glorify Christ, implicitly with joy (Revelation 21:24-26).

[Chorus]

Come let us sing a song
A song declaring that we belong to Jesus

The Foote’s invites us to join him as we declare we are Christ’s.

He is all we need

To state this in the negative, apart from God, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

Lift up a heart of praise
Sing now with voices raised to Jesus
Sing to the King

See lines 1 and 2.

[Verse 2]

For His returning we watch and we pray
We will be ready the dawn of that day

As Christ-followers, we are prepared for the second coming of Christ (Matthew 24:42-43, Matthew 25:1-13, Mark 13:33-37, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, and Revelation 16:15).

We’ll join in singing with all the redeemed

The saints gather to worship Christ’s holy Name (Psalm 30:4).

‘Cause Satan is vanquished and Jesus is King

Satan’s end will be the lake of fire (Revelation 20:7-10) while Christ’s end is to rule His people (see Verse 1, line 1).

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Those who do not yet know Jesus will find interpretation easy, despite this song’s heavy use of Christianese.  It is a song about Jesus, who is a King that His followers adore and worship.  Satan is doomed while Christ will come again.

I can’t think of a single thing that unbelievers could implicitly misinterpret.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Christ as ruler, whose authority will usurp Satan’s hold on the world and usher in His Kingdom forever.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Billy and Cindy Foote’s Sing to the King is a wonderful song.  It magnifies Christ as our ruling Authority, imploring us to join them in worship as we sing to the King of kings and Lord of lords, watchfully waiting for His eventual return, while the Devil goes to hell, bringing glory to God.  Unbelievers should have little to no problem arriving at similar conclusions.

I highly recommend this for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10

I was looking for a Hymn to support our Adult Sunday School Lesson on “End Times” and in addition to choosing and leading the music, I also am tasked with giving the background story on how the hymn came to be. Thankyou for the additional insight I found on your web page.

Nice invitation to worship song, but it doesn’t worship God directly. Speaks that Jesus is King, but doesn’t address the Lord directly to tell Him how He is worthy to be praised. It’s about Him but not to Him.

    Ibima25,

Thank you for your comment! I’m not sure why it matters if we worship God directly or indirectly, but if you’re bothered by it, I’d say pray and don’t sing if your congregation worships with it.
