1. What message does the song communicate?
Fellowship Creative receives God’s favor knowing that they didn’t earn it. The Lord, who came to earth from heaven, paid for their error on the cross. This liberates them from sin’s grip and eternal separation from God. It also demonstrates God’s great love for them,
Score: 10/10
2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?
This entire song agrees with God’s inspired Word.

[Verse]
Lord, how You’ve loved me, I don’t deserve
Grace on top of grace
More than I’ve asked for, more than I’m worth
Combines Fellowship Creative’s unworthiness with God’s undeserved favor (2 Corinthians 3:5, 2 Corinthians 12:9, and Ephesians 2:8). The phrase “grace on top of grace” represents the overflowing blessings of God (Psalm 23:5 and Ephesians 3:20).
Grace on top of grace
Repeats line 2.
[Pre-Chorus]
How sweet the sound, once lost, now found
Borrows from portions of John Newton’s famous song. See commentary on Amazing Grace, section 2, Verse 1, lines 1-4.
Heaven came down, and grace rescued me
That is, Jesus left heaven to save us (Philippians 2:6-8).
[Chorus]
Hallelujah I am free
From my sin and penalty
At the cross You took my place
The word ‘Hallelujah” is a compound Hebrew phrase, with “hallelu” meaning “a joyous praise in song” and “jah” or “yah”, which refers to the Tetragrammaton YHWH. Put together, we are singing “we joyfully praise God in song” when we use this word.
Fellowship Creative praises God because they were rescued from sin’s enslavement at the cross (Psalm 119:45, Isaiah 58:6, Isaiah 61:1, John 3:16-21, John 8:31-36, John 10:10, Acts 13:38-39, Romans 6:1-23, Romans 8:1-4, Romans 8:20-21, 1 Corinthians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 7:21-23, 2 Corinthians 3:17, Galatians 2:4, Galatians 3:13, Galatians 3:22, Galatians 5:1, Galatians 5:13, Colossians 1:21-23, Hebrews 2:14-15, and 1 Peter 2:16).
With Your grace on top of grace
Essentially repeats Verse, line 2.
[Bridge]
How sweet the sound, once lost, but now found
Heaven came down, and grace rescued me
How sweet the sound, was once lost, but I’m now found
And heaven came down, and grace rescued me
How sweet the sound, once lost, but now found
Heaven oh it came down, and grace rescued me
Repeats Pre-Chorus.
Score: 10/10
3. How would an outsider interpret the song?
This song intermixes Christianese with everyday language. The words “Lord”, “Hallelujah”, and “sin”, combined with references to Amazing Grace, point unbelievers to Christianity. This song explains the word “sin” as penalty and “grace” as undeserved.
Score: 10/10
4. What does this song glorify?
It glorifies God that this song proclaims Fellowship Creative’s unworthiness and gratitude for Christ’s love for them.
Score: 10/10
Closing Comments
Fellowship Creative’s Grace On Top of Grace is Biblical. It shows gratitude for the Lord’s sacrifice that frees us from the consequences of our lawbreaking, bringing glory to God. Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.
I recommend it for corporate worship.
Final Score: 10/10
