1. What message does the song communicate?

Gateway Worship lists examples of things God is greater than, but they also plainly state that God is simply greater.  He is also faithful, the source of Gateway Worship’s hope, and His praise is on our lips.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire song is Biblical.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1-4: God is sovereign over His creation (Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 4:39, Deuteronomy 10:14, Joshua 2:11, Nehemiah 9:6, Psalm 29:10, Psalm 45:6, Psalm 50:7-15, Psalm 93:1-2, Psalm 115:3, Psalm 135:6, Isaiah 43:13, Isaiah 45:9-10, Isaiah 46:10, Lamentations 5:19, Daniel 4:35, Romans 9:19-21, Ephesians 1:11, Hebrews 1:8, James 4:15, Revelation 4:11, and Revelation 20:11).

Line 5: Gateway Worship invites their audience to join in their song.

[Chorus]

Lines 1-3: See Verse 1, lines 1-4.

Line 4: Repeats line 2.

[Verse 2]

Line 1: God is trustworthy to Gateway Worship (Numbers 23:19, Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 33:4, Psalm 91:4, Psalms 119:90, Lamentations 3:22-23, 1 Corinthians 1:9, 1 Corinthians 10:13, 2 Thessalonians 3:3, 2 Timothy 2:13, Hebrews 10:23, 2 Peter 3:9, and 1 John 1:9).

Line 2: See Verse 1, lines 1-4.

Line 3: Gateway Worship’s hope is found in God (Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 33:20, Psalm 39:7, Psalm 62:5, Isaiah 40:31, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 11:28-30, Romans 5:1-8, Romans 8:24-39, Romans 15:13, 1 Corinthians 15:54-58, and 1 Peter 1:3-6).

Line 4: God is greater.  Period (Deuteronomy 10:17, Psalm 8:3-4, Psalm 147:5, Job 26:14, Isaiah 40:28, and Isaiah 55:8-9).

[Interlude]

Line 1: A rhetorical question.

[Bridge]

Lines 1-3: All have sinned (Romans 3:23) and it separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2, Romans 6:23). However, God’s love for us compelled Him to send Jesus to sacrifice Himself for our sins (John 3:16, Romans 5:6-8), which is greater than our sins (1 John 3:20; see Jeremiah 17:9 about the human heart).  This also references the term “I AM”, God’s name for Himself in Exodus 3:14 and used by Jesus to claim deity in John 8:24 and the greatness of God’s name (Psalm 8:1, Psalm 8:9, and Jeremiah 10:6).

Line 4: Repeats line 2.

Lines 5-13: With the exception of line 6, which is similar to Verse 1, line 5, this repeats lines 1-4.

Lines 14 and 15: The word ‘Hallelujah” is a compound Hebrew phrase, with “hallelu” meaning “a joyous praise in song” and “jah” or “yah”, which refers to the Tetragrammaton YHWH. Put together, we are singing “we joyfully praise God in song” when we use this word.

[Outro]

Lines 1-4: Repeats Bridge, lines 1-4.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

The word “God” tells them that it’s about a deity.  The word “hallelujah” and name “I AM” inform them that it’s about the Abrahamic God.  Its language is everyday and easy to digest.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God that we sing that God is the One who is greater than everything else in creation, whose name is higher than above all others, is the source of our hope.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Gateway Worship’s Greater Than is great.  It communicates God’s greatness over various aspects of creation, only to tell us that nothing is greater than Him.  He is the great I AM and worshipped by His followers, bringing Him glory.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
