Hillsong Church is a megachurch founded in 1983 in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, Australia.  It was formerly led by Hillsong Founder Brian Houston.  Hillsong possesses a massive discography, spanning across four music ministries.  These include Hillsong UNITED, Hillsong Worship, Hillsong Young & Free, and Hillsong Kids.

Hillsong has won several awards within their Hillsong UNITED and Hillsong Worship artist groups.  As of this writing, there are no awards for Hillsong Young & Free or Hillsong Kids.

Also, check out my entire list of Hillsong reviews and Christmas songs, Seasons and Prince of Heaven.

Note to new users: This is a different kind of review site!  Read About the Berean Test and Evaluation Criteria prior to reading this review.  I strongly encourage you to consider the potential blessings and dangers of this artists theology by visiting Resources.

1. What message does the song communicate?

Hillsong yields to God, their liberator.  They also desire to be where He is.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The whole thing completely agrees with Scripture.

Lyrics posted with permission.*

This song does not contain a Verse/Chorus/Bridge structure.  Therefore, I assigned stanzas for each paragraph.

Side Note: The Stanza order is 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, and 3.

[Stanza 1]

Falling on my knees in worship
Giving all I am to seek your face
Lord all I am is yours

Hillsong surrenders to God (Psalm 43:5, Isaiah 64:8, Matthew 10:38, Matthew 11:28-30, Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34-38, Mark 10:28, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:27, John 15:1-11, Romans 6:13, Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 2:20, Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 11:6, James 4:7-10, and 1 Peter 5:6).

[Stanza 2]

My whole life
I place in your hands
God of Mercy
Humbled I bow down
In your presence at your throne

This makes the same point as Stanza 1, as well as describing God’s mercy (Exodus 33:19, Psalm 86:5, Psalm 145:9, Lamentations 3:22-23, Luke 6:36, Romans 9:15-16, Ephesians 2:4-5, Titus 3:5, Hebrews 4:16, and 1 Peter 1:3) and Hillsong’s humility (Micah 6:8, Romans 12:3, Romans 12:16, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Ephesians 4:2, Philippians 2:3-8, Colossians 3:12, James 4:6-10, James 4:14-16, and 1 Peter 5:5-10).

[Stanza 3]

I called you answered
And you came to my rescue and I

Christians will understand this as the cross (Isaiah 53:1-12, Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, John 1:29, John 3:16, John 19:30, Acts 4:12, Acts 20:28, Romans 5:6-10, Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 6:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Galatians 1:3-4, Galatians 3:13, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:6, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 9:15-26, 1 Peter 1:17-21, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 2:1-2, and Revelation 5:9).

I wanna be where you are

Hillsong desires to be with God.

[Stanza 4]

In my life be lifted high
In our world be lifted high
In our love be lifted high

Hillsong wants to do all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31, 2 Thessalonians 2:14, Colossians 3:17-23, and 1 Peter 4:11).

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

They should easily interpret the same as I stated in section 1.  However, it’s not immediately clear which version of “God” Hillsong refers.  It would be One who is called “Lord”, is worshipped, is merciful, and rescues.

Score: 7/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God as praiseworthy for redeeming those who are His.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Hillsong UNITED’s Came To My Rescue is simple.  Christians worship God for rescuing them, which bring Him glory.  However, from an unbeliever’s perspective, this could apply to any version of God that contains these broad strokes.

Still, if played within a church, they will know immediately that the Christian God is what is meant by “God”, thus, this song is suitable for corporate worship.

Final Score: 9.5/10
