Hillsong Church is a megachurch founded in 1983 in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, Australia.  It was formerly led by Hillsong Founder Brian Houston.  Hillsong possesses a massive discography, spanning across four music ministries.  These include Hillsong UNITED, Hillsong Worship, Hillsong Young & Free, and Hillsong Kids.

Hillsong has won several awards within their Hillsong UNITED and Hillsong Worship artist groups.  As of this writing, there are no awards for Hillsong Young & Free or Hillsong Kids.

Also, check out my entire list of Hillsong reviews and Christmas songs, Seasons and Prince of Heaven.

Note to new users: This is a different kind of review site!  Read About the Berean Test and Evaluation Criteria prior to reading this review.  I strongly encourage you to consider the potential blessings and dangers of this artists theology by visiting Resources.

1. What message does the song communicate?

Though once wayward children, Hillsong saw the error of their ways, realizing they were lost without the Lord.  Yielding to His ways, they praise Him in song for all He’s done for them.  No man or woman can take that away from them.

This would have been a different review had Hillsong not used the word “Lord”.  Without it, it could have easily been interpreted as a human lover.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The whole thing.

This song does not contain a Verse/Chorus/Bridge structure.  Therefore, I assigned stanzas to each paragraph.

[Stanza 1]

It used to be darkness
Without You
I lived my life in blindness
Now I am found

Refers to the three parables Jesus told in response to the Pharisees and Scribes grumbling saying “Jesus receives sinners and eats with them” (Luke 15:1-2).  These are:

  1. The parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3-7),
  2. The parable of the lost coin (Luke 15:8-10); and
  3. The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32).

This also references spiritual blindness (2 Kings 6:17, Luke 24:31, John 3:3, John 9:39, Acts 26:12-18, 2 Corinthians 3:12-18, 2 Corinthians 4:6, and Ephesians 1:18).

[Stanza 2]

And I’ll sing, I’ll sing, I love You so
And I’ll sing

Hillsong responds to God by praising Him with song (1 Chronicles 16:23, Psalm 33:3, Psalm 96:1-2, Psalm 98:1, and Psalm 149:1).

Because the world can’t take away
Your love

The world can only destroy the flesh (Matthew 10:28).  They cannot take away His love.

[Stanza 3]

Found me in weakness
Broken
You came to me in kindness
And now I live

Describes Hillsong’s trajectory from destruction to life with God (Romans 6:1-11, Romans 7:4-6, Galatians 2:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:11, and 1 Peter 2:24).

[Stanza 4]

And I’ll sing, I’ll sing, I love You so
And I’ll sing
Because the world can’t take away
Your love

Repeats Stanza 2.

[Stanza 5]

And I’ll sing, sing, I love You so
And I’ll sing
Because the world can’t take away
Your love

Repeats Stanza 2.

[Stanza 6]

And I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done

Hillsong surrenders to God (Psalm 43:5, Isaiah 64:8, Matthew 10:38, Matthew 11:28-30, Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34-38, Mark 10:28, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:27, John 15:1-11, Romans 6:13, Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 2:20, Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 11:6, James 4:7-10, and 1 Peter 5:6).

I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done

[Stanza 7]

I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done
I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done

Essentially repeats Stanza 7.

[Stanza 8]

I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done
I’ll give my life for You Lord
For all You’ve done
I’ll give my life for You Lord

Essentially repeats Stanza 7.

[Stanza 9]

And I’ll sing, I’ll sing, I love You so
And I’ll sing
Because the world can’t take away
Your love

Repeats Stanza 2.

[Stanza 10]

And I’ll sing, I’ll sing, I love You so
And I’ll sing
Because the world can’t take away
Your love

Repeats Stanza 2.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

The word “Lord” is the only clue unbelievers receive that this song is religious. Most would probably think it’s Christian given that Christianity has the corner market on that word. The rest is written in everyday language. They will conclude that Christians believe that they are lost without God, who found them in their state of despair, healed them, and made them His own.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies God as the One who rescued Hillsong from destruction and gave them eternal life.  it also brings Him glory when they worship Him in song.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Hillsong UNITED’s Sing (Your Love) passes muster.  It reminds us that we were once lost people in need of a Savior, who compels us to surrender to Him in worship.  These points bring Him glory.  Unbelievers should have no trouble interpreting this song.

It is suitable for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
