Hillsong Church is a megachurch founded in 1983 in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, Australia.  It was formerly led by Hillsong Founder Brian Houston.  Hillsong possesses a massive discography, spanning across four music ministries.  These include Hillsong UNITED, Hillsong Worship, Hillsong Young & Free, and Hillsong Kids.

Hillsong has won several awards within their Hillsong UNITED and Hillsong Worship artist groups.  As of this writing, there are no awards for Hillsong Young & Free or Hillsong Kids.

Also, check out my entire list of Hillsong reviews and Christmas songs, Seasons and Prince of Heaven.

Note to new users: This is a different kind of review site!  Read About the Berean Test and Evaluation Criteria prior to reading this review.  I strongly encourage you to consider the potential blessings and dangers of this artists theology by visiting Resources.

  • Unique

Lyrics posted with permission.*

[Verse 1]

Your love so great

How great?  Hillsong tells us later.

Jesus in all things
I’ve seen a glimpse of Your heart

All things were made with a purpose (Proverbs 16:4).  This is also a subtle nod to the cross (Isaiah 53:1-12, Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, John 1:29, John 3:16, John 19:30, Acts 4:12, Acts 20:28, Romans 5:6-10, Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 6:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Galatians 1:3-4, Galatians 3:13, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:6, Titus 2:14, Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 9:15-26, 1 Peter 1:17-21, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 2:1-2, and Revelation 5:9).

Side Note: Some people might say this is an example of panentheism, kind of like the force in Star Wars.  I don’t agree that this song teaches it, but it’s something to watch out for.

A billion years
Still, I’ll be singing

That is, for all eternity Hillsong will worship in song (Nehemiah 9:5, Psalm 30:12, Psalm 52:9, Psalm 86:12, Psalm 89:1, Psalm 115:18, Psalm 145:1-2, Psalm 145:21, and Revelation 5:9-13)

How can I praise You enough?

They cannot.

How can I praise You enough?

Repeats line 6.

[Chorus]

You are the Lord Almighty

There are 48 references in the Old Testament and 10 in the New Testament.

Outshining all the stars in glory

This is so because the stars declare His glory (Psalm 19:1-4).

Your love is like the wildest ocean
Oh nothing else compares

There is no one like God (Exodus 8:10, Exodus 9:14, Deuteronomy 3:24, Deuteronomy 33:26, Jeremiah 10:6, 1 Samuel 2:2, 2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Kings 8:23, 1 Chronicles 17:20, Psalm 86:8, Psalm 89:6, Psalm 113:5-6, Jeremiah 10:7, Isaiah 40:18, and Isaiah 46:9).

[Verse 2]

Creation calls
All to the Saviour

That is, Jesus (Isaiah 45:21-22, Hosea 13:4, Luke 1:47, Luke 2:11, Acts 13:23, 1 Timothy 2:3, Titus 2:13-14, and 1 John 4:14).

We are alive for Your praise

That’s right because dead people can’t worship God (Isaiah 38:18-20).

In earth and sky, no one is higher

See Chorus, lines 3 and 4.

Our God of wonders, You reign

That is, the God that does wonders who endwells beyond the second heaven and into the third (Genesis 28:12, Deuteronomy 10:14, 1 Kings 8:27, and 2 Corinthians 12:2).

Our God of wonders, You reign

Repeats line 5.

[Bridge]

Not to us, but to Your name
We lift up all praise

This has already been covered in Verse 1, lines 4 and 5, and Verse 2, lines 1-3.

Not to us, but to Your name
We lift up all praise
Not to us, but to Your name
We lift up all praise
Not to us, but to Your name
We lift up all praise

Repeats lines 1 and 2.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Jesus is name-dropped in this song’s opening lines, easing unbelievers towards a Christian interpretation.  His followers worship Him because He is awesome and does good things.  This song is written in plain English.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus as the wonderous Savior whose love is greater than anything else.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Hillsong Worship’s Love So Great, as the title suggests, is about His great love.  What makes His love great?  He saves, is incomparable, and is better than anything else.  These points bring Him glory.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

This song is suitable for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
