1. What message does the song communicate?

As creatures who were given the breath of God, we take His breath and give it back to Him in the form of praise and worship.  He founded Christianity, gives us new mercies every day, and His love surrounds us.

By Jesus, You alone”, Housefires is referencing the entire God-head, not merely Jesus.

Side Note: To those annoyed by massive repetition, Bridge repeats the same two lines four times in a row, albeit with slight variation in ad-libbing.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

Almost the entire song is word-for-word from Scripture.  Everything else derives from it.

[Verse]

Line 1: Quotes from the beginning of Psalm 95:1.

Line 2: Quotes from the beginning of Psalm 95:6.

Line 3: Quotes from the end of Song of Solomon 2:4.

Line 4: A slight rewording of the beginning of Lamentations 3:23.

[Pre-Chorus]

Line 1: First the first part, see Verse, line 1.  For the second, this is a cat-call to Casper the friendly ghost.

Line 2: Repeats the tail end of line 1.

[Chorus]

Lines 1 and 2: Borrows from the middle of Isaiah 52:13.

Lines 3 and 4: Combines part of line 1 with part of Deuteronomy 6:5 and Mark 12:30.

Lines 5 and 6: Christ is the foundation of our faith (Deuteronomy 32:4, 1 Samuel 2:2, 2 Samuel 22:47, Psalm 18:31, Psalm 28:1, Psalm 62:2, Psalm 94:22, Isaiah 28:16, Matthew 7:24-27, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 2 Timothy 2:19, and 1 Peter 2:6); the chief cornerstone (Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 28:16, Matthew 21:42, Acts 4:11, Ephesians 2:20-22, and 1 Peter 2:7).

Lines 7 and 8: Repeats lines 3 and 4.

[Interlude]

Line 1: Agreement.

Line 2: Essentially repeats Chorus, line 1.

[Bridge]

Line 1: Housefires responds to Jesus’ statement in Luke 19:40, followed by responding in the negative.

Line 2: The breath that God gave to mankind (Genesis 2:7 and Job 33:4) returns to Him as praise (Psalm 150:6), followed by affirmation.

Lines 3-8: Essentially repeats lines 1 and 2, with ad-libs containing:

  • More Casper references
  • More responses in the negative
  • Repeating parts of Bridge again

[Refrain]

Lines 1 and 2: Quotes from the end of Psalm 103:1.

Line 3: To be specific, Housefires attitude changes because they fixed their eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) as part of their sanctification process (John 17:19, Romans 8:1, 1 Corinthians 1:2, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 6:11, Philippians 3:9, Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 10:10-14, and Hebrews 13:12).

Lines 4 and 5: Repeats lines 1 and 2.

Line 6: As demonstrated in 2 Chronicles 20:1-30, Psalm 8:2, and Psalm 149:5-9.

Line 7: Essentially repeats line 6.

Lines 8-16: Repeats/essentially repeats lines 1 and 2, with ad-libs containing:

  • The food that horses eat
  • More Casper

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers will think Christians worship Jesus as their God.  Despite heavily quoting the Bible, this song managed to stick with lines that use everyday language.  It helps that Jesus is explicitly mentioned by name.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus that we worship Him as the founder of our faith for His kindness, love, and compassion.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Housefires’ Lift You High is uplifting.  It calls for us to praise Jesus for new mercies every day, for loving us, and for being the firm rock on which we stand.  These glorify Him.  Unbelievers should not have issues interpreting similarly.

Though not my personal favorite, this song is suitable for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
