American folk-rock and pop-Christian artist Jordan Feliz began his career with the band A Current Affair.  He left in 2015 to begin his solo career.

Feliz released four albums, including:

  • Beloved (2015)
  • The River (2016)
  • Future (2018)
  • Say It (2020)

He won a Dove for New Artist of the Year in 2016.

1. What message does the song communicate?

Jesus will make His triumphant return. Feliz inquires of his audience, asking if we are prepared for it and imploring us to do so. This truth helps Feliz navigate life’s challenges and the immoral behavior of others. This world as it currently is will not last. We celebrate before, during, and after He comes.

Side Note: To those annoyed by massive repetition, Bridge essentially repeats the same phrase six times in a row.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The entire song is based on the Bible.

Lyrics posted with permission.*

[Intro]

We know that He’s coming back (We know, we know)

More on this later in the song.

We know that He’s coming back (We know, we know)
We know that He’s coming back (We know, we know)
We know that He’s coming back (Ooh)

Repeats/essentially repeats line 1, alongside a call to Casper the friendly ghost.

[Verse 1]

Have you ever thought that the world has kinda lost its way? (Mmm)

It’s been that way since Adam fell in Genesis 3:6-7.  Also, contains smacking of lips when Feliz is ready to chow down.

Crazy as it seems, yeah, I know it’s gonna be okay (Ooh, yeah)

Feliz explains why in a second.  Also, contains a reference to Kool-Aid Man’s catchphrase.

[Pre-Chorus 1]

It doesn’t scare me, it’s temporary

That is, momentary, light affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17).

There’s something better, we got forever
And it won’t be long ’cause we know our help is on the way, the way

References 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

[Chorus]

So keep your head up
Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back

References the second coming of Christ, to which He will return the same way He left: physically on the clouds (Matthew 24:43, Acts 1:9-11, 1 Corinthians 11:26, 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4, 2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 16:15, and Revelation 19:11-16).

No, don’t you give up
Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back

Repeats/essentially repeats lines 1 and 2.

And when the world gets complicated
We’re gonna keep on celebrating

As though He is already here.

‘Cause we know (Yeah, we know)
Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back

Repeats/essentially repeats line 2.

[Verse 2]

We gotta stay awake ’cause nobody knows the day or time (No)

References the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13.

The trumpet’s gonna blow and the skies are gonna open wide (Ooh, yeah)

References the beginning portion of Matthew 24:31-41.  Repeats Kool-Aid Man’s famous phrase.

[Pre-Chorus 2]
He’s coming for us just like He told us

Yes, because He keeps all His promises (Numbers 23:19, Joshua 21:45, Joshua 23:14, 1 Kings 8:56, Romans 4:21, 2 Corinthians 1:20, 1 Thessalonians 5:24, Hebrews 10:23, and 2 Peter 3:9).

It’s been a long wait but there’s a new day
And we’re gonna sing Hallelujah when the King arrives
Oh, you know you gotta

The word ‘Hallelujah” is a compound Hebrew phrase, with “hallelu” meaning “a joyous praise in song” and “jah” or “yah”, which refers to the Tetragrammaton YHWH. Put together, we are singing “we joyfully praise God in song” when we use this word.  We will worship Him (Matthew 2:11, Matthew 14:33, Matthew 21:9, Matthew 28:8-9, Matthew 28:16-17, Luke 24:50-53, John 12:13, and John 20:28) as our King (Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 11:10, Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:1-6, Luke 1:32-33, John 12:15, John 18:37, 1 Timothy 6:13-16, Revelation 17:14, and Revelation 19:11-16).

[Bridge]
Woo-ooh, yeah

A similar off-branch of Kool-Aid Man’s signature words.

Are you ready? Are you ready?

That is, for Jesus’ return.  See Verse 2, line 1.

People get ready, people get ready
Are you ready? Are you ready?
People get ready, people get ready
Are you ready? Are you ready?
People get ready
Yeah, let’s get ready

Repeats/essentially repeats line 2.

[Outro]
Are you ready now? Are you ready now? (Yeah)
People get ready (Woo!)
We just wanna celebrate it (Hey! Hey!)
Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back
So keep your head up
Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back

Repeats differing parts of other lyrics covered in my commentary.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

The phrase “Jesus is coming back” is the dead giveaway that this is a Christian song.  Unbelievers will easily conclude that this means that He will make His return on earth, and that they need to get ready for it.  Feliz’s language is everyday and easy to digest.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus that this song warns us that He is coming, and that we must remain vigilant.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Jordan Feliz’s Jesus Is Coming Back is great.  The title says it all: He is returning and we must be ready.  This glorifies God.  Unbelievers should have no issues understanding this song’s meaning.

This song is inspirational, but does not focus on proclaiming God’s value and worth.  It is focused on warning Christians that Jesus will make His triumphant return.  Thus, it is not appropriate for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
