1. What message does the song communicate?
Though it’s wonderful that creation points us to God’s majesty and wonder, His willingness to pay for sins on the cross is grandiose given that it’s for undeserving people. Still, Redman is grateful for Jesus’ sacrifice, praising Him as Redman ought to because He deserves it.
Score: 10/10
2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?
All of it!
[Verse 1]
Lines 1-4: The heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1-4).
Line 4-7: The Lamb of God that was slain is Jesus (Isaiah 53:7, John 1:29, John 1:36, Acts 8:32, 1 Peter 1:19, Revelation 5:6-8, Revelation 5:12-13, Revelation 6:1, Revelation 7:9-17, Revelation 12:11, Revelation 13:8, Revelation 14:1-10, Revelation 15:3, Revelation 17:14, Revelation 19:7-9, and Revelation 21:9). This is more grand than creation declaring God’s glory because of how unworthy we are to receive His forgiveness (Genesis 3:22, Genesis 8:21, Job 15:14-16, Psalm 14:2-3, Psalm 51:5, Proverbs 22:15, Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 3:10-18, Romans 3:23, Romans 5:12, Romans 6:23, and Ephesians 2:2-3).
[Verse 2]
Lines 1-7: Either repeats the same point or the same lyrics as Verse 1.
[Chorus]
Lines 1-6: An expanded version of John 1:29.
Also known as Golgotha or “the skull”, Calvary is where Jesus was crucified (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, and John 19:17). The English name “Calvary” derives from the Vulgate Latin “Calvariae”, which means “skullcap”. He is also known as the “Light of the world” according to John 8:12.
[Verse 3]
Lines 1-4: Redman spends his eternity thanking God for what He’s done (Nehemiah 9:5, Psalm 30:12, Psalm 52:9, Psalm 86:12, Psalm 89:1, Psalm 115:18, Psalm 145:1-2, Psalm 145:21, and Revelation 5:9-13).
Lines 5-8: A slightly altered version of Verse 1, lines 4-7 that points to the resurrection of Christ: that death is defeated (Isaiah 25:8, Hosea 13:14, Luke 20:35-36, 1 Corinthians 15:24-26, 1 Corinthians 15:55-57, 2 Timothy 1:10, Hebrews 2:14, and Revelation 20:14).
[Bridge]
Lines 1 and 2: A paraphrase of Revelation 5:12.
Lines 3 and 4: Repeats lines 1 and 2.
Lines 5 and 6: See commentary on lines 1 and 2.
Lines 7 and 8: Repeats lines 5 and 6.
Score: 10/10
3. How would an outsider interpret the song?
Those who are not yet followers of Jesus will easily interpret it. Christians love Jesus because He died for them. The terms “Lamb of God” and “Calvary” are dead giveaways. However, the word “sin” from the perspective of the unlearned is closer to mere mistakes that violate God’s commandments.
Score: 9/10
4. What does this song glorify?
It glorifies Jesus as the One who takes away the sins of the world.
Score: 10/10
Closing Comments
Matt Redman’s Lamb of God is great. It calls us to worship Jesus because He is worthy of our praise. Chiefly, because He paid the penalty for our lawbreaking. These bring Him glory. Aside from the concept of sin, unbelievers should easily interpret this song.
I highly recommend it for corporate worship.
Final Score: 9.5/10
