1. What message does the song communicate?

The song’s title summarizes almost all the points Maverick brings up throughout this song. There are other side points offered, such as fixing one’s eyes on Jesus, references to the “heroes of faith”, and a testimonial of a modern-day example of God’s Presence with one of His people. However, “God is with us” is their main argument.

Side Note: To those who are annoyed by massive repetition, you may want to avoid the 2nd half of the song.  It adds nothing substantive that isn’t already covered during the first half and contains more repetition than I care to quantity except to say “a ton of it”.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

The whole song, including all the ad-libs and the testimonial near the end.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1-6: God is with Maverick (Deuteronomy 31:6-8, Joshua 1:5-9, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 139:7-10, Isaiah 41:10, Jeremiah 23:23-24, Zephaniah 3:17, Matthew 6:25-34, Matthew 28:20, John 14:16-17, Hebrews 13:5, Romans 8:38-39, and Revelation 3:20) and will not forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:8-9, 1 Chronicles 28:20, Psalm 118:6, Lamentations 3:22-23, and Hebrews 13:5-6).

[Verse 2]

Lines 1-6: Jesus is Maverick’s most prized possession (Hebrews 12:2).

[Pre Chorus]

Lines 1-4: References Daniel 6:22.

Lines 5-8: References Daniel 3:25.

[Chorus]

Lines 1 and 2: Jesus is in the room (see Verse 1, line 6).  As is Casper the friendly ghost.

Side Note: This gets repeated in subsequent Chorus’ with ad-libs that add nothing significant.

[Bridge]

Lines 1-16: Every other line repeats the same phrase. The entire thing borrows from Psalm 139:7-12 and the structure of Psalm 136.

The word “hell” is ambiguous in the English vernacular. It could either mean sheol (that is, the place where the dead goes) or gehenna (that is, the lake of fire) depending on context. Given that “He’s there”, we can safely remove Gehennah as a potential explanation and stick with Sheol.

Side Note: This entire section is repeated two more times, followed by Chorus, and then Bridge again, with more repeats of various lines and ad-libs that make the same point, several Chorus’, then they start adding that:

  • Jesus is the specific person “in the room”
  • Talitha resurrected (Mark 5:41)
  • In the same manner, we can get up.

This is followed by a testimonial and more repetition.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

If it wasn’t obvious after the first five minutes, the second five will drill it deep into their skulls: Jesus is with Christians.  He is explicitly mentioned during an ad-lib session but heavily implied with the word “Savior” that appears in Verse 2.

The only thing they might not know is who Talitha is.  Not a big deal.

Score: 9/10

4. What does this song glorify?

Jesus.  He’s here with us.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Maverick City Music’s In The Room is, well, in the room.  Not just the song, but Jesus also.  That’s it.  That’s the whole show.  It also peppers other points, such as His Prominence with believers and a call to “get up”.  Unbelievers will easily interpret this song similarly, even if they don’t know about Talitha.

This song is suitable for corporate worship.  Most people would probably only sing the first half of the song.

Final Score: 9.5/10
