1. What message does the song communicate?

This song makes several points about God/Jesus and themselves:

God/Jesus

  • Demonstrated His awesome love by sacrificing for Passion, who did not deserve His favor or forgiveness
  • Good
  • Raised the physically and spiritually dead
  • Blesses
  • Calls
  • Heals
  • Saves
  • Provides might

Themselves

  • Received grace
  • Continually remembers the cross
  • Blessed
  • Called
  • Healed
  • Saved
  • Receives God’s strength
  • Received gifts intended to glorify God
  • Returns to Calvary if they falter

Side Note: To those annoyed by massive repetition, Chorus 3 repeats the same statement four times in a row, with each containing three repeats of the sentence’s opening words.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

All of it lines up with Scripture.

Lyrics posted with permission.*

[Verse 1]

Amazing love
That welcomes me
The kindness of mercy
That bought with blood, wholeheartedly
My soul undeserving

Describes Christ’s incredible sacrifice amid Passion’s sinful state (Romans 5:6-8).

[Chorus]

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

God’s acts towards Passion are for their benefit (Exodus 33:19, Psalm 13:6, Psalm 23:6, Psalm 27:13, Psalm 31:19, Psalm 34:8, Psalm 84:11, Psalm 100:5, Psalm 107:1, Psalm 118:29, Psalm 119:68, Psalm 145:9, Matthew 7:11, Mark 10:18, Luke 11:13, Luke 18:19, Romans 2:4, Philippians 1:6, James 1:17, and 1 Peter 2:1-3).

Side Note: The tune and lyrics of the Chorus borrow from Paul Makai’s hymn God Is So Good. Passion changes the pronoun from “is” and “He’s” to “You’re”.

[Verse 2]

Behold the cross
Age to age
And hour by hour

Passion invites us to continually remember the cross that Jesus died on to save us (Psalm 77:11).

The dead are raised, the sinner saved
The work of Your power

This speaks both of Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 16:1-20, Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-29, Acts 1:3, Acts 3:15, Acts 4:33, and 1 Corinthians 15:3-8) and our spiritual awakening (Romans 6:1-11, Romans 7:4-6, Galatians 2:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:11, and 1 Peter 2:24).

[Chorus 2]

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

Repeats Chorus 1 twice.

[Bridge]

I am blessed, I am called

God provides for Passion’s needs (Philippians 4:19), bestows gifts (James 1:17), and calls them to follow Him (Matthew 22:14).

I am healed, I am whole

This could be both physical (Matthew 8:3, Matthew 9:29-30, Matthew 20:34, Mark 1:41-42, Mark 8:22-25, Luke 5:13, Luke 7:14-15, and Luke 22:51) and spiritual (See Verse 2, lines 4 and 5).

I am saved in Jesus’ name

There is no other name that could save (John 14:6 and Acts 4:12).

Highly favored, anointed
Filled with Your power

Passion received undeserved favor (Genesis 15:6, Exodus 33:19, Psalm 32:1-2, Romans 3:21-24, Romans 4:3-8, Romans 5:1-2, Romans 5:6-8, Romans 5:15-21, Romans 6:14, Romans 8:1-4, Romans 9:14-16, Romans 11:5-6, Galatians 2:21, Galatians 3:6, Galatians 5:4, Ephesians 1:7, Ephesians 2:4-9, 2 Thessalonians 2:16, Titus 2:11, 1 Timothy 1:15-16, and James 2:23), annointing from the Holy One (1 John 2:20-27), and strength (Nehemiah 8:10, Psalm 22:19, Psalm 28:7-8, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 118:14, Isaiah 12:2, Isaiah 33:2, Isaiah 40:29-31, Habakkuk 3:19, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Ephesians 3:16, Ephesians 6:10, and Philippians 4:13).

For the glory of Jesus’ name

Passion receives these things so that they can bring glory to the name of Jesus (1 Corinthians 10:31).

I am blessed, I am called
I am healed, I am whole
I am saved in Jesus’ name
Highly favored, anointed
Filled with Your power
For the glory of Jesus’ name

Repeats lines 1-6.

[Verse 3]

And should this life
Bring suffering
Lord, I will remember
What Calvary has bought for me
Both now and forever

That is, if Passion sins against God, they will return to the foot of the cross for forgiveness (1 John 2:1-2).

The name “Calvary” or “Golgotha” means “The place of a skull”.  It is where Jesus was crucified, as described in Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33, and John 19:17.

[Chorus 3]

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
God, You’re so good
You’re so good to me

Repeats Chorus 1 four times.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers will immediately know it’s Christian because the song mentions God, Jesus, the cross, and Calvary.  It explicitly states that God is good and explains why with examples written in everyday language, making interpretation easy.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Jesus as the One who saves, blesses, calls, and is good towards Passion, who uses these gifts to bring glory to His name.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Passion’s God, You’re So Good is so good.  It tells us that God is good and offers supporting evidence of His goodness, including His blessing, salvation, power, and healing, bringing Him glory.  Passion seeks to use His gifts to further bring Him glory.  Unbelievers will easily digest this song’s meaning.

I highly recommend it for corporate worship, though perhaps with fewer repeats of Chorus.

Final Score: 10/10
