Passion is a church-based worship band, much like Hillsong and Bethel.  Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, holding Passion conferences since 1997.  Born out of this movement is their Passion band, releasing a whopping 23 albums.

Their more recent 2020 Passion conference held approx. 65,000 people before COVID-19 reached epidemic status.

1. What message does the song communicate?

God’s Word is powerful, able to remove obstacles, darkness, and barriers in our lives.  He has the strength to cause us to experience His Presence, removes spiritual blindness, and heal our mortal bodies.  What is impossible for God?  To what power can equal the name of Jesus?  Nothing.  None.

There is a statement about God reviving all dreams, which, from a logical standpoint, is impossible.  For example, two football teams cannot both win the Super Bowl at the same time and in the same year, even if players on both sides dream of it.  It’s a minor point that has little affect on Passion’s overall message.

The trouble I have is that it might give Christians unrealistic expectations about our Christian walk.  Yes, God can heal us.  Yes, God’s Word can remove obstacles.  Yes, He wants us to see with spiritual eyes.  Yet, how many of us think about what God wants?  God has the power, sure, but it may not be His will.  This song (and many like it) could easily address this with something like “Even if He doesn’t, We’ll still praise you”.  It may easily feed into the Word of Faith mentality without a qualifier such as this.

Score: 8/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

Most of it agrees with the Bible, except for a minor “every” statement in Verse 2.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1-4: These are statements that speak to the power of God’s Word in that all He requires is to say the word and boom!  It’s done.  He spoke the world into motion (Genesis 1:1-27).  He rebuked the physical storm (Matthew 8:23–27, Mark 4:35–41, and Luke 8:22–25).  His Word cast demons out of men into pigs (Matthew 8:28-34 and Mark 5:1-17).  His Word convicts us, opening our hearts and minds (Hebrews 4:12).  His Word is Scripture, guiding us to become better people (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

It is this same God and power that can rescue us from our present situation (Genesis 15:1, Joshua 1:9, Deuteronomy 31:6, 1 Chronicles 28:20, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 27:1, Psalm 34:4, Psalm 56:3-4, Psalm 94:19, Psalm 115:11, Psalm 118:6, Isaiah 35:4, Isaiah 41:10-13, Isaiah 43:1, Isaiah 54:4, John 14:25-27, Romans 8:15, Romans 8:38-39, 2 Timothy 1:7, Hebrews 13:5-6, 1 Peter 3:13-14, 1 Peter 5:6-7, and 1 John 4:18), drives out the darkness (Psalm 107:10-16, Luke 1:79, John 1:1-13, John 12:46, Ephesians 5:8, Colossians 1:13, and 1 Peter 2:9), causes us to experience His Presence, filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5, Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:16-19, Galatians 4:6, Ephesians 5:18, and 2 Timothy 1:14), and opens our eyes to see with spiritual eyes (2 Kings 6:17, Luke 24:31, John 3:3, John 9:39, Acts 26:12-18, 2 Corinthians 3:12-18, 2 Corinthians 4:6, and Ephesians 1:18).

Line 5: Passion responds by expressing belief with all their heart (Romans 10:9).

[Chorus]

Lines 1 and 2: Nothing will be impossible with God (Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:17, Jeremiah 32:27, Zechariah 8:6, Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, and Luke 1:37).

Line 3: Passion worships God.  The latter part is probably a reference to Matthew 19:26, which itself foreshadows Christ’s sacrifice.

Line 4: Repeats line 1.

[Verse 2]

Line 1: See commentary on Verse 1, lines 1-4.  The Word of God causes us who are dead in sin to become alive in Christ (Romans 6:1-11, Romans 7:4-6, Galatians 2:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:11, and 1 Peter 2:24).

Line 2: Every conceivable dream will be revived?  This isn’t in Scripture, albeit a minor point.

Line 3: Essentially repeats Verse 1, line 3.

Lines 4 and 5: Repeats lines 4 and 5.

[Bridge]

Lines 1 and 2: That is, Passion expresses belief in the greater thing that is the power of Jesus’ name (Mark 16:17, Luke 10:17, Romans 10:13, Romans 10:19, Acts 3:6, Acts 3:12-16, Acts 4:30, and Philippians 2:9-11).

Line 3: Passion is inciting others to agree with them.

Line 4: Repeats line 2.

Lines 5-12: Repeats lines 1-4.

[Outro]

Line 1: Calls out to Casper the friendly ghost.

Lines 2 and 3 Repeats line 1.

Lines 4 and 5: Repeats the first part of Chorus, line 1.

Lines 6-8: Repeats line 1.

Line 9: Repeats Chorus, line 1.

Score: 9/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Unbelievers will likely reach similar conclusion to me.  Passion’s language is common and contains very little Christianese.  It’s about how powerful the Christian God is, that He can do impossible things; there’s power in the name of Jesus.

The issues I brought up regarding expectations in section 1 are more pronounced with unbelievers.  Some have walked away from Christianity because they were deceived by the more extreme aspects of the Word of Faith moment, hearing “this miracle didn’t happen because you didn’t have enough faith”.  It’s great to know that God can cause breakthroughs, but they aren’t guaranteed just because it’s within God’s power to accomplish.

Score: 7/10

4. What does this song glorify?

While it glorifies God by praising Him for His omnipotence, its failure to quality it with God’s will hinders His inherent glory.

Score: 8/10

Closing Comments

Passion’s There’s Nothing That Our God Can’t Do is a positive and uplifting song.  Its central theme is the power of God’s Word in transforming lives, bringing Him glory.  Unbelievers will find interpretation easy; However, all of us should come to Christianity with the understanding that God does not always exercise His might to rescue us from our present ailments or experience His Presence at any given moment.

This concern could easily be addressed in a pre-song speech or sermon before its use in corporate worship.

Final Score: 8/10

    Brant,

    Great question!

It’s part of a running joke when artists use “ooh” and “aah” in their song lyrics. I briefly mentioned it in my evaluation criteria page.

I too felt odd signing “revive every dream” before I read this. The line sounds new age, or from a faith other than Christianity. We are introducing this song to our church this Sunday. Does anyone have an idea for an alternate line (verse 2, line 2)? Otherwise, the message of the song is solid. Thank you

I was thinking about doing this song this Sunday and agree with the concerns regarding that second line. How about “Just one word and from my bondage I’m free” or “Just one word and from my chains I am free”? It fits the line rhythmically and the verse thematically.
