[Verse 1]

The Lord is my shepherd

The beginning of the famed Psalm 23:1.

And He is everything I need

He is Provider (Genesis 2:15-16, Genesis 9:3, Genesis 22:8, Exodus 16:1-36, Psalm 18:2, Psalm 34:10, Psalm 81:10, Psalm 84:11, Psalm 107:9, Proverbs 10:3, Malachi 3:10, Matthew 6:25-30, Matthew 7:7-8, Matthew 21:22, John 14:13-14, John 14:26, John 15:1-10, John 15:16, Romans 8:32, Ephesians 3:20, Philippians 4:19, 2 Corinthians 9:8, and 2 Corinthians 12:9).

So, I will not worry
I will not fear the enemy

What can man do to me (Psalms 118:6)?

He said that He loves me

Ad demonstrated on the cross (John 3:16, Romans 5:6-8, and 1 John 4:9-10).

He said that He’s with me even though
I walk through the valley
Of shadow and death and still I know

Both borrows from and quotes from Psalm 23:4.

[Chorus]

He has good plans

Borrows from Jeremiah 29:11.

He has good plans for me

Essentially repeats line 1.

So, I will take heart
In deserts and gardens

“No matter what”.

He has good plans
He has good plans for me
If I know my Father
I know my Father has
Good plans

Essentially repeats line 1, with the Father identified as the One who brings about said plans.

[Interlude]

No weapon formed against me will prosper

Quotes from Isaiah 54:17.

[Verse 2]

The Lord is my Savior

That is, Jesus (Isaiah 45:21-22, Hosea 13:4, Luke 1:47, Luke 2:11, Acts 13:23, 1 Timothy 2:3, Titus 2:13-14, and 1 John 4:14).

So why should I doubt my victory?
Why would I question

A rhetorical answer with an obvious answer: doubt.  A prominent example is with Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33).

The rod and the staff that comforts me?
He quiets the waters
He quiets the storm inside of me

Borrows from Psalm 23:2-4.

So, what could be better
Than walking with Him when I believe?

Nothing (Philippians 3:8-10).

[Interldue]

Oh, oh-oh, oh

Say hello to Casper the friendly ghost!

We submit to Your plans

Red Rocks Worship surrenders to God (Psalm 43:5, Isaiah 64:8, Matthew 10:38, Matthew 11:28-30, Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34-38, Mark 10:28, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:27, John 15:1-11, Romans 6:13, Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 2:20, Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 11:6, James 4:7-10, and 1 Peter 5:6).

We submit to Your plans

Repeats line 2.

[Bridge]

And surely Your goodness
And mercy will follow after me
So, fear will not find me
‘Cause I’ll be dwelling in the house of God

Quotes from Psalm 23:6, though adding the bit about fear in line 3 that coincides with Verse 1, lines 3 and 4.

Surely Your goodness
And mercy will follow after me
So, fear will not find me (Woo!)
‘Cause I’ll be dwelling right here in the house
(I’ll be dwelling right here in the house)
Surely Your goodness
And mercy will follow after me
So, fear will not find me
‘Cause I’ll be dwelling in the house of God
Surely Your goodness
And mercy will follow after me
So, fear will not find me
‘Cause I’ll be dwelling in the house of God

Repeats/essentially repeats lines 1-4.

[Outro]

Good plans

Repeats Chorus, line 9.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

Psalm 23 is a commonly known Psalm amongst unbelievers.  They should immediately recognize its association with Scripture.  The rest is easily understood: God has good plans and Christians submit to them.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

God as the One whose plans are good, among other things.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Red Rocks Worship’s Good Plans is good.  It does service to Psalm 23, alongside informing us that spiritual weapons against us are useless, God’s plans are beneficial, and fear is removed in His Presence.  We surrender in response.  These points bring Him glory.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

This song is suitable for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10

Nick

One question, in your last section you said spiritual weapons are useless? Is this a typo?
