Contemporary Christian duo Shane & Shane started in 2001. They released a staggering 40 albums (including solo and Christmas), 5 live albums, and 3 EP’s.

Also, check out my reviews of All Sufficient Merit, You’ve already won, Song in the Night, Yearn, Though You Slay Me, and Psalm 23 (Surely Goodness, Surely Mercy).

Lyrics can be found at https://genius.com/Shane-and-shane-my-portion-lyrics.

Side Note: There is another 2009 song by Shane & Shane entitled My Portion (Ps 73), However, since the “Ps 73” portion is absent at the time this song was requested, I will review the 2021 version.

1. What message does the song communicate?

The Blessed Savior shepherds, walks with, rescues, blesses, and possesses Shane & Shane.  In response, they graciously follow His commandments and worship Him, their most precious treasure.

Side Note: To those who are annoyed by massive repetition, Bridge repeats the same three lyrics four times in a row, with the third line repeating the second each time.

Score: 10/10

2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture?

This song is entirely Biblical.

[Verse 1]

Lines 1 and 2: The Savior guides Shane & Shane (Psalm 32:8, Psalm 37:23-24, Psalm 73:23-24, Psalm 119:105, Isaiah 30:21, Isaiah 48:17, Isaiah 58:11, Proverbs 3:5-6, Proverbs 16:9, Proverbs 20:24, Psalm 25:4-9, Psalm 25:9-10, Luke 1:78-79, John 14:26, John 16:13, and Romans 8:14).  He is also their Savior (Isaiah 45:21-22, Hosea 13:4, Luke 1:47, Luke 2:11, Acts 13:23, 1 Timothy 2:3, Titus 2:13-14, and 1 John 4:14).

Lines 3 and 4: He is with them (Deuteronomy 31:6-8, Joshua 1:5-9, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 139:7-10, Isaiah 41:10, Jeremiah 23:23-24, Zephaniah 3:17, Matthew 6:25-34, Matthew 28:20, John 14:16-17, Hebrews 13:5, Romans 8:38-39, and Revelation 3:20).

Lines 5-8: He is their portion (Numbers 18:20, Deuteronomy 10:9, Deuteronomy 18:2, Joshua 13:33, Psalm 16:5, Psalm 23:5, Psalm 73:26, Psalm 142:5, Psalm 119:57, Psalm 142:5, Lamentations 3:24, and Ezekiel 44:28).

[Chorus]

Line 1: The word ‘Hallelujah” is a compound Hebrew phrase, with “hallelu” meaning “a joyous praise in song” and “jah” or “yah”, which refers to the Tetragrammaton YHWH. Put together, we are singing “we joyfully praise God in song” when we use this word.  Shane & Shane praise Him for being their Savior (see Verse 1, line 1).

Lines 2-4: He is their Redeemer (John 3:16, Romans 5:6-8, 1 Corinthians 6:20, Hebrews 5:9, Hebrews 9:28, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 1 John 1:9, and 1 John 2:2) and their most prized possession (Philippians 3:8-10).

Lines 5-8: Repeats lines 1-4.

[Verse 2]

Lines 1 and 2: They show gratitude for all the blessings He has shown them.

Lines 3 and 4: They revere His law (Psalm 19:7-14).

Lines 5 and 6: Christ is a sweet aroma to those who are His (2 Corinthians 2:15).

Line 7: Borrows from Psalm 73:26.

[Bridge]

Lines 1 and 2: Also borrows from Psalm 73:26.

Line 3: Repeats line 2.

Lines 4-12: Repeats lines 1-3.

[Verse 3]

Line 1: Repeats the first part of Verse 2, line 7.

Lines 2-4: See Chorus, lines 2-4.

Lines 5 and 6: They belong to Him (John 1:12-13, John 14:18, Romans 8:14-17, Romans 8:23, Romans 9:1-8, Galatians 3:26, Galatians 4:5-7, Ephesians 1:3-14, Ephesians 2:11-22, Hebrews 9:15, and 1 John 3:1-3).

Lines 7-10: Repeats Verse 2, line 7.

Score: 10/10

3. How would an outsider interpret the song?

The words “Hallelujah” and “Savior” will point them in the direction of Christianity.  “Hallelujah” is Jewish and “Savior” is a term associated with Jesus.  Shane & Shane’s language borrows heavily from Scripture, choosing terminology that unbelievers could easily understand.  They will easily pick up the points I laid down in section 1.

Score: 10/10

4. What does this song glorify?

It glorifies Christ as Shane & Shane’s Savior, whose guidance, redemption, and law compels them to bow down in worship.

Score: 10/10

Closing Comments

Shane & Shane’s My Portion is an excellent modern hymn.  Shane & Shane follow and worship Jesus as their pearl of great price, obeying His law and remembering His kindness, bringing Him glory.  He leads, liberates, and walks with those who are His.  Unbelievers should easily interpret similarly.

I highly recommend this song for corporate worship.

Final Score: 10/10
